In this tutorial we show how to color a gravestone. We use three different shades of gray:
- a medium gray, used as the base color
- a very dark gray (almost black), used for washing technique
- a very light gray, used for dry-brush technique

Colors used
1: Base Color
First of all we color the gravestone with the base color, the medium gray:

2: Washing technique
Then we apply the washing technique: this consists in covering the model with a darker gray (almost black), which must be very washy. In this way it will not hide the base color, as it will deposit in the cracks and concavities of the model.

The washing technique highlights the dark textures of the model, as it can bee seen comparing the two models in the pic:

Left model with only the base color, right model with washing too.
3: Dry-brush technique
Finally, we apply the dry-brush technique. This consists in the opposite of the washing: we use a very light gray, but the brush must be almost totally dry, so that it hardly deposits color. A flat brush is ideal for this work.

A dry-brush must hardly deposit color in a white paper! The bottom line in the paper shows the right amount of color needed for this technique.
When we press the brush on the model, the color will deposit only on the corners and edges, in this way enhancing the depth of the model itself. The dry-brush will even lighten the base color, which was darkened by the previous washing.

After washing and dry-brush techniques, the model acquires the right aspect: all the particulars and the textures are enhanced and stand out.
